Long long ago, the family photo album was one of the most treasured items in one family. Every household had a special album in which photos of family members were kept, and passed on to future generations. However, this important picture book is conspicuous by its absence in many homes, thanks to the technology.
Back in the 1980s and 90s, photography was such an affordable hobby that many families found they had overflowing boxes of photographs to be organised into shelves of albums. Accordingly, photo albums became less expensive and more common.
Declining costs of photography meant more and more people had photographs that needed to be organised. In fact, the earliest family trees were often kept on the opening pages of elaborate photo albums, and included cutout spaces for family members.
But in this fast evolving world, digital technology has sunk the photo album into oblivion as more and more families own the digital cameras, and turn to PCs to keep their treasured photos. They believe that their photos will be stored on their computer permanently.
The dawn of the digital camera has meant that people no longer have to print out every picture and save it in a physical album; instead, many store their photographs online, only printing copies when planning to fill a specific space.
And the rise of social network sites such as MySpace and Facebook means people can remotely view their friends’ photo albums. From the old single-copy of photos our forefathers cherished to the modern virtual representations, photography and photo albums have certainly changed since their inception in the nineteenth century.
Admittedly, the digital technology has made it a lot easier to take photos of family and process them within seconds. But with the fragility of the digital equipment most of us use to preserve important information and family photos, is family history not under threat?
"Some day this generation will appear like it never existed. With no photo albums to pass family history it is very easy to fade away from the memories of the future generation,” observes Makarius Peter, a historian and archivist at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).
“I am of the opinion that technology is supposed to preserve history rather than destroying. But this kind of technology has made people lazy; no one wants to print and file photos in albums. People no longer appreciate the significance of documentation," he says.
Amon Mwilomo, 34, and his wife Dinnah, 24, who live in Tabata, once felt let down by technology after they lost all their photos, which they kept on a memory card. The couple had preserved photos they took for a whole year on the chip, until it disappeared.
“We did not see any reason for printing the photos since we had them on the memory card of our digital camera. You can imagine how we felt after we lost everything just like that,” says Amon, an electrician.
Once we come across the data loss or photo loss siuation, we must be panic and anxious. What we should do to save the deleted pictures? How to get the treasured memory back?
